I am a phD student at the Microbiology Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and currently a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley. My PhD project is focused on Escherichia coli clones from community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main goal of my research is to describe the clonal composition in E. coli isolates obtained from patients with UTIs, and to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and other genomic characteristics of these potentially epidemic clones currently circulating in the population of Rio de Janeiro.
The results will allow an analysis of the main clones of E.coli in Rio de Janeiro, enriching the knowledge of the molecular characteristic of these strains. These data are the basis for recommendations on antimicrobial use practices, care of chronic patients, research on vaccines, and establishment of parameters for classification studies of isolates during outbreak investigation.
