I am currently focused on investigating the ecological niche adaptation of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). I focus on the sequence type ST95 lineage, to help shed light on pandemic ExPEC niche adaptation and their global dissemination. The ST95 lineage is known to cause Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) and Blood Stream Infections (BSI) in humans and colibacillosis in domestic and wild birds. Interestingly, ST95 pandemicity does not appear to rely on acquiring antibiotic resistance genes. To better understand the mechanisms underlying the clonal dissemination of these pandemic E. coli, we are carrying out experiments to determine their fitness in various environmental conditions. These conditions represent human and avian host microenvironments from which ST95 could be isolated.
