I am working in collaboration with post-grad Julia Rubin and graduate student Kaitlyn Mussio on analyzing antibiotic resistant genes (ARG) of gram-negative bacteria taken from the gut microflora of healthy individuals. Rectal swab samples are donated by Berkeley residents and screened for resistant colonies using MacConkey plates containing antibiotics such as ampicillin, colistin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazone. Samples that possess the ARGs we are testing for are recorded and later sequenced to identify the species and type. Our work provides insight into the proportion of healthy Berkeley individuals who have acquired ARGs and could help identify possible dietary or lifestyle characteristics associated with having more ARGS.
